David Beckham wants AC Milan to win the Champions League - but they're not in the competition this season

Forrmer England captain David Beckham knws his football better than most with an impressive CV that included successful spells at Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan.

But now in retirement it would seem that the 40-year-old, whose business interests, sponsorship deals and brand have seen his wealth rise to make him richer than the Queen, is having trouble keeping up with current affairs in the sport.

At the opening of his new adidas store in Dubai, Beckham was asked to give his thoughts on this season's Champions League, specifically who he wanted to win the competition.

Unfortunately, Becks named a team who are not even in the competition - he was clearly trying to be diplomatic, naming his former clubs (though Real Madrid are a notable absence), but it backfired.

"Who do I want to win is a different story to who I think is going to win... or maybe it's not actually!" said Beckham,

"I'm going to have to say Man Utd, PSG or AC Milan - one of those three."

Oh dear. Beckham added: "One of those three I'd like to see win, but when you're in the Champions League, you realise how important this competition is.

"It's one of the best competitions to actually play in and definitely to win."

Beckham was then asked who he enjoyed watching most and gave a rather more measured answer - although he went against current grain after stating Wayne Rooney was having a "good start" to the season.

"Apart from the normal suspects, you know, I'm going to have to say Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo," he said.

"I think [Alvaro] Morata is an exciting player and [Marco] Verratti for PSG. I played with him, he's such a great, talented player. And, of course, Neymar.

"I think there are so many great players out there, but to pick a few, I'd have to say them.

"On the England side, I think I'd have to say Wazza [Rooney]. Wayne is playing so well for United and he's had a good start to the season so we'll see."
