Such has been the extent of Manchester United's woes this term, it is no surprise that their goalkeeper, David De Gea, scooped the double at their awards ceremony last night, winning both the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year and the Players' Player of the Year.

United sacked David Moyes last month after a hugely disappointing 10-month spell as manager after he replaced the great Sir Alex Ferguson. The defending English champions are currently seventh in the table, with the best they can hope for this season a sixth placed finish.

The form of De Gea, however, has been one of the positives from the campaign.

"I want to thank the fans. From my very first day at the club, I have felt their love and I’m really happy," the Spaniard, who was signed from Atletico Madrid for a reported £18m in 2011, said. "For them, we will try next season to do our best again."

"Sometimes it's important for your team-mates to give you confidence and I think they're some of the best team-mates you can have.

"I tried to do my best this year and I think it was my best season so far. I felt really good and confident. I will try to do the same for next season."
