Roberto Mancini yesterday defended himself over Manchester City's pursuit of Arsenal's Samir Nasri. Arsène Wenger described Mancini's comments about Nasri as "out of order" on Saturday, though Mancini insisted that he had done nothing wrong. "I said only that Nasri, and [Sergio] Aguero are two good players and I said also that Nasri is under contract with Arsenal," Mancini said. "I don't know why he's upset." Nasri has one year left on his contract at Arsenal and is stalling on signing a new deal.

Weir, 41, signs on for another year

Rangers' captain David Weir has signed a new one-year deal at Ibrox. Weir, 41 years old, had been considering a coaching role and moving closer to his family in England, but he has been convinced to stay by new manager Ally McCoist.

"I can't think of a better place to play," said Weir, who joined Rangers from Everton in 2007, since when he has made 230 appearances and won three Scottish Premier League titles. "I've got commitments to my family and, from that point of view, it's not ideal, but football-wise it's a no-brainer," he added.

Cole recommits to Hammers after move fails

Carlton Cole has insisted he is committed to West Ham United after a move to Stoke collapsed.

"I am as committed to West Ham as always," Cole said. "There has been a lot of things reported, that it was a done deal I was moving to another club. But that is not the case and I want our fans to know. I am a West Ham player and have no knowledge that is going to be any different. Unless I am told something different, I am a West Ham player and will be doing my all for the team."

West Ham agreed a fee with Stoke, but Cole did not agree a contract.
