Fortune favours Premiership option

Manchester United's Quinton Fortune has turned down a £2.5m move to the Italian Serie A side Brescia because he wants to stay in England.

The 24-year-old South African midfielder has asked to leave Old Trafford, but rejected an approach from Brescia at the weekend. Brescia were willing to pay the asking price, but the United squad player is keen to find a Premiership club instead.

Franz Beckenbauer has told England they do not need a national stadium. The former West Germany captain, now the president of Bayern Munich, said on Radio 5 Live that there are enough good Premier League grounds. On the same programme, Sir Rodney Walker, chairman of the Wembley project, promised that a new stadium was definitely going ahead at Wembley, with work on the site hopefully commencing before the end of this year.

"England does not need to have a national stadium," said Beckenbauer. "There is no national stadium in Germany because there are so many good stadiums... It is the same in England. You have so many great stadiums that there is no need to have another Wembley."

The Preston manager, David Moyes, plans to move for the veteran Scottish striker Kevin Gallacher, who is a free agent after being released by Newcastle. Moyes is also closing in on a permanent £750,000 deal for Leicester City's Richard Cresswell, who had a successful loan spell at Deepdale.

Rangers have made a £4m offer for the Derby County defender Seth Johnson. The Ibrox chairman David Murray has made his move after weeks of behind-the-scenes talks.

Derby want more cash, but could have to settle for letting Johnson talk to Rangers this week. Johnson has told friends he does not fancy moving to Scotland at this stage of his career, but he will be put on the spot by Rangers in the next few days.

Trevor Francis, hopes to sign the highly-rated Huddersfield keeper Nico Vaesen for £800,000 this week. The Birmingham City manager has made an offer for the Belgian, who has been outstanding for the Yorkshire side since he joined them three seasons ago.

Vaesen will reluctantly leave Huddersfield after their relegation ­ which was caused by failing to beat Birmingham on the last day of the season. Francis sees Vaesen as his new No 1 and that could lead to the departure of Ian Bennett.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker Steffen Iversen may miss all next season after a series of concussions. Reports yesterday indicate that the 25-year-old, who had briefly returned to Norway, will not be allowed to train during the off-season.

"Steffen could be out of football for a long time," the Norway national team doctor, Lars Engebretsen, was quoted as saying. "Other sportsmen who have had the same injury have been forced to miss a whole season."
