Greg Dyke says he was given six watches in year with FA

Greg Dyke insists he will not resign as Football Association chairman after receiving a watch worth more than £16,000 but has called for an end to the culture of gifts being given to football officials (PA)

Greg Dyke has received “about six” watches since he took over as chairman of the Football Association last year, he has revealed, following the controversy over Brazil’s top footballing body handing out £16,000 watches at this summer’s World Cup.

On Sunday, Fifa faced fresh allegations of a cover-up after it emerged the report into alleged corruption during the bidding to stage the World Cup in 2018 and 2022 would never be released publicly. Hans-Joachim Eckert, the chair of the adjudicatory chamber of Fifa’s ethics committee, said the 350-page report compiled by investigator Michael Garcia would never be published.

The ethics committee has also been vocal this week on officials returning the Parmigiani watches handed out by the Brazilian Football Confederation’s World Cup sponsors or face disciplinary action.

Dyke, one of the few footballing figures to condemn corruption in the international game, has already vowed to give his back. He told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek: “I’ve been given about six watches since I took over at the FA and I don’t use any. I don’t like the culture of present-giving in football.”

The gifts were handed to 28 members of Fifa’s executive committee, 32 association chiefs and five South American associations.
