Jack Wilshere: 'Arsene Wenger doesn't see me as Arsenal's defensive midfielder yet'

Jack Wilshere has told Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger that he is willing to play in the deep-lying holding role for the club, just like he has been doing to such a high standard for England but Wenger does not see him in that position "just yet".

Wilshere plays further forward in the Gunners' midfield, but says he is prepared to drop back for his club, whose need for a defensive midfielder has been highlighted this season.

"I wouldn't mind playing it at Arsenal and I've already spoken to the manager about it - he doesn't see me playing that role just yet," he said.

"I enjoy my role for Arsenal as well because I can get a bit further forward, but I wouldn't mind playing the holding role for Arsenal. That's the manager’s decision.

"At the moment, I think Mikel Arteta is injured and Mathieu Flamini is playing that role. It’s down to him. If he wants me to play there, I'll play it."

Wilshere has excelled for England in recent matches, and contributed a fine assist to team-mate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the 3-1 win over Scotland.
