Clarke Carlisle, the chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association, believes the four-match ban handed out to John Terry for racially abusing Anton Ferdinand dilutes and undermines the Football Association's attempts to tackle racism within the game. Terry has until 18 October to decide whether to appeal against the FA's ban, which was half that imposed on Luis Suarez for racially abusing Patrice Evra last year.

"The Luis Suarez eight-match ban really did send out a strong message... that racism isn't tolerated in the game," said Carlisle. "To dilute that with this four-match ban, it has almost undermined the initial message that went out."
