Fans fight outside Anfield after Liverpool lift Premier League title

A video has emerged on social media showing a mass brawl outside Anfield as Liverpool fans celebrated the club’s first Premier League title triumph in 30 year.

More than 3,000 people turned up at Anfield during Liverpool’s 5-3 victory over Chelsea on Wednesday, where Jordan Henderson finally lifted the Premier League trophy that the club secured at the end of June to end their three-decade long wait to be crowned English champions.

Thousands celebrated at Anfield when Liverpool clinched the title after Chelsea’s victory over Manchester City on 25 June, and even more turned out the following night in the city centre where unsavoury scenes saw a firework set the famous Liver Building on fire.

The celebrations played out during the coronavirus crisis and saw social distancing guidelines largely ignored, sparking fears that it could help fuel a spike in the number of Covid-19 cases in the north-west - one of the hardest hit areas in the UK.

As a result, Liverpool issued a statement in partnership with Merseyside Police, the City Council and supporters’ group Spirit of Shankly urging fans not to attend Anfield, though many ignored the pleas and travelled regardless of the Dispersion Order that was put in place by authorities until 9:30pm on Friday night.

Nine people were arrested by police for a range of offences that included affray, assault, people who were drunk and disorderly and drug-driving.

However, a video has emerged online that appears to show a mass brawl outside the stadium that involves at least a dozen males, with cans and bottles thrown as projectiles and several punches thrown.

At one stage, a man can be seen attempting to kick another individual, before having a drink thrown in his face in response.

Liverpool issued a statement on Thursday to condemn the scenes witnessed outside their stadium, which was released before the fight footage came to light, despite a number of pleas for supporters to remain at home and not gather on the streets surrounding Anfield for the third time in under a month.

The statement read: “Liverpool Football Club would like to thank those supporters who stayed at home to celebrate the team lifting the trophy last night, protecting their loved ones and our city from the ever-present threat of this pandemic. We are, however, disappointed with the scenes outside Anfield last night and that more supporters did not heed the celebrate at home advice.

“The club and our city partners Merseyside Police, Liverpool City Council and Spirit of Shankly, have worked in-step for the past eight weeks to consistently encourage fans to support the team from home and we would like to thank them for their continued support and collaboration in the lead-up and throughout football returning behind closed doors.

“Thanks should also go to those from CleanEvent and Liverpool Streetscene Services, who did incredible work this morning cleaning up Anfield and surrounding areas.

“Our local community is the heart of our club and their co-operation and patience as our neighbours, as well as the engagement of our local ward councillors, the Safety Advisory Group and emergency services also deserves our gratitude.

“As we have said before, when it is safe to do so we will celebrate, until then protecting our city is the priority.”
