Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis has been charged by the Football Association for alleged misconduct in relation to betting.

The Argentina international is accused of committing 12 breaches of an FA rule, allegedly relating to football matches between 22 January and 28 January 2016.

"It is alleged the player committed 12 breaches of FA Rule E8 concerning football matches between 22 January 2016 and 28 January 2016," a statement from the FA read.

FA Rule E8 prohibits players from betting on matches or competitions in which they are participating.

It reads: "A Participant shall not bet, either directly or indirectly, or instruct, permit, cause or enable any person to bet on - (i) the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in, a football match or competition; or (ii) any other matter concerning or related to football anywhere in the world, including, for example and without limitation, the transfer of players, employment of managers, team selection or disciplinary matters."

Demichelis, who is currently away on international duty, has until 5.00pm on April 5 to respond to the charge.

The 35-year-old centre-back, who has made 29 appearances for the club this season, played in both of City’s games during the period under investigation.

Demichelis started in the 2-2 league draw at West Ham United on 23 January and in the 3-1 Capital One Cup semi-final win over Everton on January 27.

A worldwide ban on betting on football was enforced on August 1, 2014 for all those involved in the game.

The Independent have approached Manchester City for comment and are awaiting response.
