Macclesfield Town have announced that their Northampton-born midfielder Richard Butcher died at his Manchester home on Sunday night at the age of 29.

A statement on the club's website read: "It is with great sadness that we have to announce the untimely death of Richard Butcher.

"Richard passed away at his home in Manchester overnight. He was an exemplary professional and a thoroughly likeable young man. Our thoughts are with his wife and family at this very difficult time."

It is unknown what caused Butcher's death but the news comes just 10 months after their manager Keith Alexander passed away.
