They may be "forged in industry, striving for glory" but Manchester United appear to have missed the mark with a new checked gingham kit design - the club's fourth in four seasons.

Although a sneak preview of the home strip, in the club's signature devilish red - patterned in some oblique reference to Manchester's history of cotton mills - has racked up nearly 25,000 likes on the team's Facebook page, the comments below show a divide in opinion among the team's fans.

"It reminds me of an old tablecloth," one supporter says, while another wonders whether it “was made from Sir Alex's pyjamas". Interestingly, the fashion editor of this newspaper loves it...
