Newport County 1 Swansea City 3: FAW to investigate attack on official

Newport County and their manager, Peter Beadle, can expect to face the wrath of the Football Association of Wales following the events that propelled the Conference South side into the national headlines

The sight of the fourth official Alan Sheffield, from Walsall, being taken from the field on a stretcher with his head heavily bandaged after being hit by a £1 coin was a sight that will reverberate all around football.

Sheffield had to have seven butterfly stitches inserted in his forehead when the missile, thrown from a section of Newport fans behind the dug-out, broke a blood vessel close to his eye. He was allowed home after treatment in South Gwent hospital on Saturday night.

Newport can expect a heavy fine while Beadle will surely receive a lengthy touchline ban after being sent to the main stand by the referee for "foul and abusive language'' after he had disputed a free-kick that led to Swansea's second goal.

The manager refused to take responsibility for any part in the incident, but the sight of him raging at the referee will not assist his defence at the inquiry.

Chris Blight, Newport's chairman, said: "I am deeply ashamed by what's happened. I appeal to any of our supporters who saw who did this to report them."

Swansea, of League One, progressed to the second round with goals from Lee Trundle, Izzy Iriekpen and Leon Britton. Ian Hillier replied for County.
