Nottingham Forest 2 Salisbury City 0: Tyson strikes to knock out Salisbury

Having given the League One leaders a scare by holding them 1-1 in Wiltshire 12 days ago, Salisbury again gave Forest a fright at the City Ground and deserved more after punching above their weight at the home of the one-time European Champions, and their hopes of winning the right to play Premier League Charlton at home in the third round were ultimately snuffed out by a goal that looked offside.

Vociferously encouraged by more than 1,100 fans - almost a fifth of the crowd - the Conference South side attacked Forest gamely even after going behind to Nathan Tyson's fifth goal in four matches early in the second half. They were killed off 10 minutes from the end when a goal by substitute Nicky Southall was allowed to stand even though Salisbury's players protested that he had been in an offside position when he received Tyson's pass.

Television replays appeared to support that, despite Forest manager Colin Calderwood's view that Southall had been behind the ball when Tyson released it.

The non-League side's manager, Nick Holmes, was sanguine in defeat despite the circumstances. "The players felt the second goal was offside but you can complain all you like about referees but it does not change things," he said. "We probably did not do enough to win the game even though I'm sad to lose, but there was not a lot between the sides and we did our league proud." Forest rained shots on the Salisbury goal but could not make one count until Tyson broke the deadlock after 53 minutes with his second goal in the tie, his shot creeping over the line despite Simon Browne's efforts to keep it out.

It was a goal that could have sapped the part-timers' spirits after missing some good opportunities of their own, notably with a first-half header by Browne from a Luke Prince free-kick and when Paul Sales sliced horribly over in the second half. Yet they put Forest under pressure for long periods thereafter until Southall's contentious goal ended their hopes.
