Non-league side Oxford City yesterday sacked one of their strikers after he posted a homophobic message on Twitter while watching the TV programme Celebrity Big Brother. Lee Steele wrote of the former Wales rugby star Gareth Thomas: "I wouldn't fancy the bed next to Gareth Thomas. #padlock my arse." Thomas came out as gay in 2009.
It has not been a good few days for footballers on Twitter: on Tuesday the Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was forced to apologise after he described team-mate Aaron Ramsey as "looking like a rapist".
