PSV fans create 'poverty as a spectacle' by throwing coins at beggars in Madrid

PSV Eindhoven supporters have been filmed allegedly mocking homeless people in Madrid before their Champions League defeat to Atlético last night.

The Dutch fans were seated on the terraces of several bars in the Plaza Mayor area of the Spanish capital when a group of women approached the tables requesting spare change.

While the travelling support obliged with cash, the footage depicts how the women were made to pick the money up off the pavement to a chorus of chanting and laughter.

The footage was posted on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon, hours before the European tie at the Vicente Calderón, with the caption: “Fans of the @PSV humiliating women in Madrid by throwing coins and laughing at them. Poverty as a spectacle.”

It has since been reported by Spanish newspaper Sport that Madrid police intervened to ensure the situation did not escalate further but there is no suggestion any action followed.

Stoke City striker Bojan Krkić is among those to have responded to the incident, saying on Twitter: “This sort of behaviour is shameful and doesn't represent the true football fan or those of us who love the game.”

The Eindhoven club eventually fell to an 8-7 defeat on penalties following 210 goalless minutes over two legs in the round-of-16.
