Wayne Rooney sent his, and Manchester United's, best wishes to George Best yesterday after the former United player was put back on a ventilator after a "disturbed" night in a London hospital.

The 59-year-old Best has been in the intensive care unit at the Cromwell Hospital, west London, after suffering a severe setback and a lung infection.

Rooney said yesterday: "People around the club say he's the best to ever wear a Manchester United shirt. Hopefully, he'll get himself better and carry on with his life. On behalf of myself and everybody involved at Manchester United I send George and his family our thoughts and best wishes."

Professor Roger Williams, who has been overseeing Best's treatment, said: "He had a disturbed night but he is still very alert, very sedated on the ventilator. He remains critically ill but fairly stable."
