The Good: Wigan's late luck turns

It is never usually true that luck in football evens itself out: How could it? Why would it? But on Saturday we saw a rare, warming example of it. The previous weekend Wigan had drawn with Blackburn, conceding a goal that should not have been and a 100th-minute penalty to goalkeeper Paul Robinson. On Saturday, though, James McArthur could capitalise on Wes Brown's blunderbuss-touch in added time to set up Franco di Santo. The covering man fell over, and Di Santo tapped in his sixth goal in English football. What price Sunderland being compensated next weekend?

The Bad: Ravichandran Ashwin

On the day Wigan showed surprising nerve at the crunch, India misplaced theirs. With two balls left of the third Test with the West Indies, India needed two runs to win. Ravichandran Ashwin blocked Fidel Edwards; a bizarre dot-ball. From the final delivery, he raised himself to run a single, but demurred on the return which would have won the game, eventually trotting back only to be run out at the strikers' end: the second ever draw with scores level.

The Odd: Madness at Alfreton

More last-gasp drama, this time in the BSB Premier. Four goals in five minutes is one thing, but four goals in five minutes, after 92 with just one, is even more spectacular. So it was at Alfreton Town versus Hayes & Yeading on Saturday: two minutes into the added-on, Alfreton were 1-0 up. After six of it, 3-2, after twice losing and twice regaining the lead, Nathan Jarman scoring the winner. Pity those that left before the final whistle.
