Wanted: Goalkeeper, now that second-choice Rami Shaaban has broken his leg, and a centre-half to cover for the deficiencies of Pascal Cygan.

In: Will wait until the summer for Stephen Carr.

Out: Would like to offload Kanu, Igor Stepanovs or possibly Francis Jeffers.

They say: "I will observe what happens with an interested eye, but completely as a spectator who has nothing to pay to watch." Arsène Wenger.

Aston Villa

Wanted: Attacking midfielder, striker and centre-half.

In: Muzzy Izzet, but only if money is generated.

Out: Would like to offload Alpay, Bosko Balaban, Mustapha Hadji and probably Juan Pablo Angel.

They say: "It is unlikely, unless we sell someone, that I will be able to bring anyone in at the moment." Graham Taylor.

Blackburn Rovers

Wanted: Defensive cover to support Martin Taylor.

In: Gabriel Milito. May wait until the summer to bid for Michael Dawson.

Out: Corrado Grabbi, Craig Hignett.

Birmingham City

Wanted: Support for Clinton Morrison in attack. More cover in defence.

In: Christophe Dugarry (loan) or Marcus Bent, Ferdinand Coly (loan – with view to permanent deal), Bill Tchato (loan).

Out: No one.

They say: "I'm not going to make any multi-million-pound signings. In fact I would be amazed if we see a lot of money spent." Steve Bruce.

Bolton Wanderers

Wanted: Centre-back to shore up a defence incapable of keeping clean sheets.

In: "Two or three quality loan signings." Expect them to be from abroad.

Out: No one – unless Tottenham want to pay up for Michael Ricketts.

They say: "If we don't add to our squad in January then we are unlikely to stay out of the bottom three." Sam Allardyce.

Charlton Athletic

Wanted: A striker to convert the chances and help hold the lead.

In: Benni McCarthy (loan).

Out: No one.

They say: "I think we are like most clubs. There is not much about and I do not think we will be spending any money bringing players in." Alan Curbishley.

Chelsea

Wanted: Midfield cover for Frank Lampard and Emmanuel Petit.

In: No one.

Out: Would love to offload £40,000-a-week Winston Bogarde. May do deal over Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink or Eidur Gudjohnsen if price is right.

Everton

Wanted: More cover in defence and midfield.

In: Ibrahim Said, Colin Healy.

Out: No one.

They say: "It would be nice if we could help David [Moyes] sign a couple more. But there is no big money." Bill Kenwright, vice-chairman.

Fulham

Wanted: Another centre-half, a creative midfielder.

In: A striker on loan. But would like to buy Barry Ferguson.

Out: John Collins, Lee Clark, and will listen to offers for any other players (especially £40,000-a-week Steve Marlet).

They say: "If possible we may try to find another striker – maybe on loan." Jean Tigana.

Leeds United

Wanted: Another centre-half, cover in midfield.

In: Possibly Kleberson, if other players are offloaded. Want Darren Anderton, but may have to wait.

Out: Would love to sell Olivier Dacourt, Mark Viduka and, of course, Lee Bowyer.

Liverpool

Wanted: Damien Duff (but probably will not happen) and any other quality wide player, plus defensive cover, especially for Markus Babbel.

In: Hakan Yakin.

Out: Would like to sell Patrik Berger, Vegard Heggem and Bernard Diomède.

Manchester City

Wanted: Possibly the big spenders of the transfer window. Need a striker to partner Nicolas Anelka and another centre-half.

In: Miroslav Klose, Djamel Belmadi.

Out: No one.

They say: "I've got a little bit of money to spend in the transfer window." Kevin Keegan.

Manchester United

Wanted: Another striker. In: Probably no one, although Sir Alex Ferguson may turn to Spain or Italy for a striker such as Lazio's Claudio Lopez. Sunderland's David Bellion will probably arrive in the summer. Out: No one – but would offload Roy Carroll and David May.

They say: "No more spending until the end of the season." Peter Kenyon, chief executive.

Middlesbrough

Wanted: A striker and a defensive midfielder (although Mark Wilson may provide cover if he remains injury free).

In: No one – but don't rule out a loan deal. Would like to buy Malcolm Christie.

Out: No one, although would probably offload Dean Windass and Noel Whelan.

They say: "We were given a budget to work with and spent ours in the summer and I suspect a number of other clubs went down that line." Steve McClaren.

Newcastle United

Wanted: A defence. Can't rely on outscoring the opposition. Probably will have money to spend.

In: Would love John Terry, but will settle for Isaac Okoronkwo. Have shown a constant interest in Feyenoord's Brett Emerton but he may prove too expensive.

Out: Want to sell Marcelino – and possibly Carl Cort and Clarence Acuna.

They say: "I did my buying at the start of the season." Sir Bobby Robson.

Southampton

Wanted: Another striker now that Agustin Delgado has failed.

In: No one.

Out: No one. But may struggle to hold on to Wayne Bridge. Would like to offload Kevin Davies. Andrei Kanchelskis may also go.

Sunderland

Wanted: Striker to support Kevin Phillips (if he stays), a creative midfielder and a commanding centre-half.

In: No one.

Out: No one – unless there is a big offer for Phillips and Man Utd make an early move for David Bellion, who is out of contract. Kevin Kyle to go on loan. They say: "There are no funds available for players and we know January will be a testing time." John Fickling, chief executive.

Tottenham Hotspur

Wanted: Striker to support Robbie Keane.

In: Will they take the plunge and buy Kevin Phillips?

Out: Would love to offload Sergei Rebrov. Expect Les Ferdinand and Tim Sherwood to go.

They say: "If we do buy or sell any players during the transfer window we'll go ahead and do our business behind the scenes." Glenn Hoddle.

West Bromwich Albion

Wanted: A striker, a left-sided defender and midfield creativity.

In: Artim Sakari, Peter van der Heyden, Bernard Lambourde.

Out: No one. They say: "The transfer window is becoming what we expected it to be – a bane in the lives of newly promoted clubs." Gary Megson.

West Ham United

Wanted: Striker and centre-half to replace Tomas Repka.

In: Yakubu Ayegbeni (loan – with view to £3m transfer), Les Ferdinand, Rob Lee. Can they keep denying interest in Gabriel Batistuta? (Depends how desperate they are).

Out: Vladimir Labant, Titi Camara and possibly Repka.
