Two Malacca United players in hospital after being struck by lightning during training session

A teenage goalkeeper is in intensive care after being one of two players struck by lightning during a training session in Malaysia.

Australian-born goalkeeper Stefan Petrovski, 18, and Muhammad Afiq Azuan, 21, who both play for Malacca United, were both rushed to hospital after the incident on Tuesday evening as the team prepared for the Presidents Cup.

Petrovski is reported to have been knocked unconscious and had to be resuscitated by medical staff before going to Malacca Hospital.

"He received initial treatment at the emergency unit. After that he was transferred to the intensive care unit for further treatment," said Dr Datuk Dr Za’aba Baba told The Sun in a statement.

"His condition is stable and his breathing is supported with a ventilator."

According to Malacca President Cup manager Khairi Anuar Ahmad, in charge of the tournament Melacca United are playing in this week, "Afiq is in stable condition and unhurt but traumatised."

Family members of the goalkeeper are expected to fly in from Australia and Portugal soon.

Malacca’s Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron described the incident as "totally unexpected," as "it was not raining heavily at the time."

Petrovski, previously of Sydney Olympic, signed for the Malaysian Premier League club after being recently naturalised.
