Rivaldo, who was given a free transfer by Barcelona at the weekend, has admitted that the lingering acrimony between himself and the returning Barça coach, Louis van Gaal, was the reason behind his agreement to part company with the Catalan club. The pair fell out during the Dutch coach's last spell at the Nou Camp, from 1997 to 2000.

"Van Gaal is the main cause of my departure," the Brazilian World Cup winner said. "I don't like Van Gaal and I am sure that he doesn't like me either."

Milan have emerged as early front-runners for the striker's signature. "I can confirm talks [with Rivaldo] are taking place," the Milan vice-president, Adriano Galliani, said. Rivaldo's agent appeared to rule out a move to Newcastle, saying his client preferred Spain or Italy.

Lazio have reiterated that their Italy international defender Alessandro Nesta is still for sale, although they are holding out for a big fee. "If Manchester have paid £30m for Rio Ferdinand, Nesta is worth more," the Lazio president, Sergio Cragnotti, said yesterday.

The Australia coach Frank Farina has hinted that Leeds United's Harry Kewell is likely to take over from Paul Okon as the Socceroos captain. "He has the respect of the boys and has the makings of a leader," Farina said. "I think he would enjoy the job and it is just a matter of time."

Shelbourne can clinch a potentially money-spinning tie with the Portuguese club Boavista if they can overcome Hibernians of Malta in tonight's Champions' League first qualifying round, second leg at Tolka Park. The Irish champions drew 2-2 last week in the first leg in Valetta.

In the same competition, Barry Town are hoping to salvage some pride against Latvia's Skonto Riga at Jenner Park tonight. The Welsh champions are 5-0 down from the first leg.

The Swiss League has docked points from three clubs after financial irregularities. Lucerne lose four points, Lugano seven and Winterthur eight.
