Gordon Taylor, the chief executive of the Professional Footballers Association, has called upon the Football Association to scrutinise Roman Abramovich's takeover of Chelsea.

Taylor believes the Russian billionaire's motives should be questioned. "These days, because of the problems we're having in football, maybe there is a need for the FA to look at the ownership of clubs to make sure people are involved for the right reasons," he said.

"I know the Football Supporters' Federation and the Supporters Direct organisation are saying that there should be a 'fit-and-proper-person' rule in football to make sure that the person who is in ownership of the club gives clear undertakings as to their intentions.

"Nothing ceases to amaze you in football," Taylor added, "but I'm sure there will be a few eyebrows raised and it will be interesting to see what the FA have to say."
