Antonio Conte says the rules on celebrations are “a pity” after Alvaro Morata picked up a fifth booking of the season following his winning goal for Chelsea in the League Cup against Bournemouth on Wednesday.

The booking means that he will now miss the match with Everton on Saturday due to suspension.

The Spanish forward celebrated exuberantly after the strike, although he was booked for time-wasting.

“The only problem is Morata, who took a yellow card and for this reason is not available for the game against Everton,” Conte said.

“A big loss for us, but it happened. It's okay. I must be honest, in that moment we were enjoying the goal and I didn't see the situation. But I knew that he tried to celebrate a goal with the ball under the shirt.

“I repeat, it's a pity. It's a pity. But we have to accept it. We have to accept the decision and try, at the same time in the future, to pay great attention. He's very happy because his wife is waiting [to give birth to] a kid.”

“I repeat, it's very important to see what happened. If the referee booked him only because he put a ball under his shirt, I think it's a pity. You can allow this because these are celebrations and you are showing your joy. You have to see because then, if something different happened after this, the referee judged it in a different way.”

Conte said it means he will now have to come up with a “different plan” against Everton, although it appears likely that will involve playing with Eden Hazard as a false nine.

“For sure, Morata should have played against Everton. He would have started the game, for sure. But now I have to prepare a different plan. I have different options. I have a day to make the best decision ahead of the Everton game.

“At training everyone was in good form, and I have time to make a decision. This match is very important for us, the last game before Christmas. I'd like to spend a good Christmas with a good game, a good win. It would be very important to get three points, but we know very well that, in the last five games, Everton won four games. They are in a good moment of form.

“They changed the coach and are having good results. For this reason, we must pay great attention on Saturday.”
