AP McCoy on Arsenal: 'If I was performing that bad I'd have retired a long time ago'

Arsenal supporter retiring after illustrious career - and suggests some of the players do the same

Tony McCoy, the 19-times champion jump jockey who plans to retire at the end of the season, suggests that some members of his beloved Arsenal side should consider the same course.

“I’m thinking I’m not the only one who should be retiring,” said McCoy, a fervent Gunners fan, in the wake of the Champions League humiliation by Monaco at the Emirates last week.

“A few of them… If I was performing that bad I’d have retired a long time ago.”

Though clearly speaking light-heartedly, McCoy added pointedly: “Thank God, I didn’t get there [he watched it on TV], because I had been racing at Bangor that day. It was embarrassingly bad.

“The annoying thing is, you watch them against Man City, and think they’re making progress, and then they just look so unorganised and lethargic. I don’t like to mention names, but I should think some of them didn’t need to be told how bad they were.

“I will spend more time watching them now, and I like going to the Emirates. You do get to watch good football and, like a lot of people, I am an Arsène Wenger fan. Hopefully things are going to improve.”
