Arsenal vice-captain Per Mertesacker was left 'shaken but unhurt' after being involved in a road traffic accident on Monday.

According to the Mirror, the 30-year-old defender was driving down the M1 in torrential rain when he lost control of his vehicle and hit the central reservation.

A source close to the club said that Mertesacker had not been injured in the incident and was fit to return to training.

“Per had an accident after he left training [on Monday] morning when he went onto the M1 returning home," the source said.

“The car aquaplaned into the crash area on the central reservation.

“He was shaken up but not injured. No other vehicles were involved and there was no one else in his car."

Mertesacker has not played for Arsenal since contracting a virus in August. He is not expected to feature in Wednesday's opening Champions League fixture against Dinamo Zagreb, but may return for the Premier League away trip to Chelsea on Saturday.

Despite the German defender's unavailability, Arsene Wenger's side have kept three clean sheets in his absence, with understudy Gabriel Paulista earning plaudits for his performances.
