Arsenal news: Bernd Leno reveals Unai Emery set up Danny Welbeck FaceTime chat ahead of Wolves draw

Leno said the entire squad FaceTimed Welbeck ahead of the 1-1 draw with Wolves

Bernd Leno has revealed that Unai Emery arranged a FaceTime session with the injured Danny Welbeck ahead of Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon.

Welbeck broke a bone in his right ankle midway through the first-half of the club’s goalless draw with Sporting in the Europa League, with the severity of the injury clearly upsetting a number of his Arsenal team-mates.

The 27-year-old was immediately taken to hospital and has since undergone surgery.

And Leno revealed that the entire squad spoke to Welbeck in the dressing room before taking to the field on Sunday.

“We talked to Danny in the meeting before the game, we had a FaceTime session with him,” Leno said. “It was very good, we wanted to win for him.

“We all are sorry for him for his injury, and hope he will have a good recovery and to see him on the pitch because he's an important player for the team and also in the dressing room.

“He looked very happy and I think he was happy to talk to us because he is still a big part of our team and we will support him to have a good time when he is injured.”

Leno — who was outstanding in the draw on Sunday — added that Welbeck is a popular member of the Arsenal dressing room.

“The meeting was very motivating for us, and every player wanted to play for Danny because everybody likes him,” Leno added. “That is also a big quality of the manager because he always wants to have a team — not just one player or a group of individuals.”

Arsenal confirmed over the weekend that Welbeck had an operation on his ankle on Friday, the day after sustaining the injury. However it remains unclear exactly how long his recovery will take.

After drawing with Wolves, Emery conceded that Welbeck had suffered a “big injury”, adding that he was in regular contact with the player.

“I think it is better the doctor say to you. It's a big injury. The doctor can say better than me," he said. “We spoke with him yesterday and today.”
