Arsene Wenger hopes that history repeats itself for the fourth time tonight after highlighting that Arsenal have won their first match after the last three general elections.

The Gunners are looking to keep pace with Manchester City in the battle to finish runners-up to Chelsea in the Premier League table, and Wenger’s side will also have revenge on their mind when they take on Swansea at the Emirates.

However, the Frenchman has pointed to a rather unusual record in the hope that his side continue a trend that has its ties in the political world more so than the football world, and he also revealed his hidden interest in how the country takes to the polls when the general election comes around.

“I’ve been told that we have won our first match after each of the last three general elections,” Wenger said in his programme notes for tonight’s match.

“That’s a good habit and one we want to continue. I love to watch politics because I sometimes look at it like a strategy and a game as well – who makes the points, who comes out as a winner. It’s very interesting but you have to think that the country plays its future every time, because the people vote for the people who will represent them.

“The thing I regret in modern day is that e sometimes neglect to vote and forget that people did fight for their lives to get the right to do it. We think it’s absolutely natural but it’s very important.”

Looking back at the trip to the Liberty Stadium last November – where Arsenal went ahead through Alexis Sanchez only to concede twice and suffer a 2-1 defeat – Wenger admitted that he wants to make up for the loss and take the Gunners’ record to 31 points taken from the last 33 available.

“We want to continue to win – for me that is absolutely vital for our ambition,” he added. “In this season’s away fixture we had a big disappointment because we were 1-0 up and lost 2-1 but we want to put that right and continue our run tonight.”

He also took the time to praise his opposite number Garry Monk, and congratulated the former Swansea defender on impressing in what is still only the first full Premier League season of his young managerial career.

“Garry Monk has done very well for his first complete season,” said Wenger. “He’s a very young manager so that’s absolutely amazing and promises a bright future for a guy who has just started.

“To put Swansea at the level that they are now is absolutely outstanding.”
