Chelsea cash in on Mido's loss of composure

The champions won 2-0 after Spurs were reduced to 10 men in the 25th minute when Mido, their Egyptian forward, was shown the red card for striking the back of Asier Del Horno's head with his forearm in a robust challenge.

The dismissal sparked a pushing match as Mido, who clearly felt aggrieved, took time to leave the pitch and John Terry, the Chelsea captain, earned himself a booking. A yellow card was all that Martin Jol, Tottenham's head coach, thought that Mido deserved.

With tension high, Chelsea took the lead six minutes before the interval when Del Horno used the front of his head to direct Frank Lampard's cross powerfully past Paul Robinson in the Tottenham goal. Chelsea wrapped up the points after 71 minutes when Damien Duff's mis-hit shot bounced into the net. Terry finished the game with a knee injury that will concern England's coach, Sven Goran Eriksson, with the World Cup qualifying match against Wales coming up on Saturday.

Jose Mourinho, Chelsea's manager, said: "I don't know about England. He has to join up for the medical department to see him. It's a decision for them and I support every decision that they make." Andrew Cole scored the winner as Manchester City came from behind to beat Portsmouth 2-1 at home and move up to second place. City fell behind seven minutes after half-time when John Viafara glanced home Laurent Robert's free-kick.

Sander Westerveld, Portsmouth's Dutch goalkeeper, deflected Joey Barton's 66th-minute cross into the path of Claudio Reyna, who equalised and, three minutes later, Cole settled it. Wigan collected their first points at the expense of another promoted side, Sunderland, holding on for a 1-0 victory after Jason Roberts scored a second-minute penalty.

Everton are languishing alongside Wigan on three points after losing 1-0 at Fulham, where their former on-loan striker Brian McBride scored.
