Chelsea join 'tired' Manchester City in stunning defeats to leave Leicester City and Arsenal at the top
Claudio Ranieri's flying Foxes profit from disappointing afternoon for two of the Premier League's pre-season title favourites
Chelsea slumped to their eighth Premier League defeat of the season as they lost 1-0 at home to Bournemouth yesterday.
The latest setback in a terrible season for the champions left them languishing in 14th place – 14 points off the Champions League places.
Jose Mourinho, Chelsea’s manager, said on Sky TV: “We didn’t deserve to lose. Our opponent – in the period that they thought only of defence – managed to get a goal and there was a clear mistake from the referee. I think it is a clear handball and penalty with the score at 0-0.”
On a remarkable day for last season’s top two Manchester City fell to a third defeat in five matches, this time 2-0 at Stoke. City slipped from the top of the table, behind Leicester, after they were well beaten by a Stoke side who took an early grip on the game through two goals by Marko Arnautovic.
Manuel Pellegrini fears his City squad are running on empty and said that without Vincent Kompany, Yaya Touré and Sergio Aguero they are struggling to compete on four fronts, including the Champions League, and could not cope with the energy of a vibrant Stoke side.
