Premier League end-of-season round-up

Chelsea will begin their 2020/21 Premier League campaign against Brighton as Frank Lampard attempts to convert the Blues from top-four contenders to genuine title challengers.

Lampard’s side secured Champions League football this season by finishing fourth last term, level on points with third-placed Manchester United, but they were an alarming 15 points off second-placed Manchester City and significantly further off runaway leaders Liverpool.

The club have spent lavishly this summer to try and help bridge the gap, making up for last summer’s transfer ban with the additions of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, and more could yet be on the way with £90m Kai Havertz on the radar.

They will all be needed to hit the ground running if Chelsea are to show the form required to challenge the pace set by Liverpool last season, with Chelsea set to juggle their Premier League title campaign with another tilt at Europe following last season’s progress to the last-16.

The first real tests of Lampard’s side’s credentials will come early when they host Liverpool in week two and travel to Manchester United in October.
