Christian Eriksen eager to bring scintillating international form back to the Premier League

In modern football, statistics are churned out and the numbers are crunched but often the results only tell one side of the story.

However, nobody can argue with the incredible form Christian Eriksen is producing after his two-goal salvo for Denmark brought Ryan Giggs’ flying start to life as Wales manager grinding to a halt.

The Spurs midfielder used the Nations League stage to deliver another five-star performance for his country.

His ruthless run in front of goal began with a hat-trick against Bulgaria back in 2016, and he has since gone on to hit the net in 19 times in 23 matches.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the only man to boast a more prolific record with 25 goals in that time, but Lionel Messi (16) and Neymar (11) do not even come close.

“With Denmark I’m a little bit further up the pitch and not so much involved in the build-up because we probably have less of a build-up than we do at Spurs,” said Eriksen. “It’s a bit different with Denmark, we go for the long ball a bit earlier and try to get the second ball.

“Everyone wants to play like Spurs, we want to play attractive football, get the ball forward and create chances with good possession.

“My form with Denmark hasn’t been too bad, I got off to a very slow start with five goals in my first 50 games. It took me a while but I’m finally here, it’s almost going too well but I hope it carries on.”

The 26-year-old has also laid on five assists for his team-mates in the last 19 games, meaning he has been directly involved in 20 goals.

But he is yet to find the back of the net for Spurs this season as the focus switches to returning to winning ways following their defeat by Watford last time out. If they want to recapture their early season form then they will have to topple one of the favourites for the Premier League title.

Liverpool have cemented their credentials as candidates to take Manchester City’s crown by scoring nine goals and only conceding once in their four straight victories so far.

Eriksen has been caught up in a bitter feud with the Danish FA during the last week, but now he is planning to transfer his international form into the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime at Wembley.

“I’ve always had many shots, even in the Premier League but I just haven’t scored yet,” he said. “I’m trying to get in good positions in every game to create something or take a shot but they just keep flying in for the national team.

“It’s great to have that form going into this weekend but on the Spurs front we have to show something from what we did at Watford.

“We have to get on the horse again and we know Liverpool is a big, big game against a team who have been one of the best this season.”
