Manchester United are preparing to persuade David de Gea that he should stay at Old Trafford, following the collapse of his long-awaited move to Real Madrid.

The goalkeeper's current deal is set to expire at the end of the season and, after the breakdown of his transfer to the Spanish giants, the player's future is uncertain.

Sources close to De Gea believe that United will propose a new deal in the coming months, despite the player rejecting a £240,000-a-week contract to stay in Manchester earlier this year.

The Old Trafford club will need to table their offer before January, at which point Madrid and any other potential suitors will have the opportunity to sign the 24-year-old on a pre-contract arrangement.

Club team-mate Juan Mata, who is also currently training alongside De Gea with the Spanish national team, has backed the goalkeeper to put the deadline day drama behind him.

"He seems the same as ever to me," said Mata. "He’s calm, relaxed. He has a naturally calm personality. These have been difficult days but he is ok."

It has, however, been reported that De Gea has blamed United over the move falling through.

According to the Sun, the player has branded United's management of the deal as 'catastrophic' and 'unbelievable'.
