Liverpool had already confirmed James Milner would wear the number 7 shirt following his switch from Manchester City, but today fans got to see the England international with the famous jersey.

The 29-year-old, who joined on a free transfer after running down his contract at the Etihad, follows in the footsteps of some famous players.

Luis Suarez was the last to wear it before making it vacant to join Barcelona. Others include Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler, Ian Rush and Fernando Torres.

Despite wearing the same number jersey at Manchester City, Milner is aware of what it means at his new club.

"I was No.7 at Man City, but at a club like Liverpool you can wear any number on the squad and it'll have been filled with amazing players who have worn it before," he told the club's official website.

"I know seven is a special number for this football club and hopefully I can be a special player for this club [...] Hopefully I can do the shirt proud and win plenty of matches for this football club."

When asked what he wanted to achieve at Anfield, the former Aston Villa player said: “I'd like a trophy cabinet full of medals, to be honest. That's the reason why I've come here."
