Premier League weekend round up: November 10-11

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed that he and fellow Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville are “never off the phone to each other” these days, after admitting that he disliked the Manchester United defender when the two men competed against each other as players.

Carragher and Neville have garnered widespread praise for the punditry work they have done on Sky Sports in recent years, entertaining viewers whether they are offering tactical insight before, during and after Premier League matches or fiercely debating each other on screen.

When it was put to him in an interview with ITV show 'Granada Reports' that he has an intriguing relationship with Neville, Carragher replied: “It intrigues me!

“When he was playing I didn't like him. No. I think we were both very similar in what we were for our clubs. We weren't the superstar player. We had Steven Gerrard and [United] had David Beckham or Eric Cantona. We were the solid citizens of our clubs.

“Both defenders, and we know how it works, the attackers can win you the game but the defenders can lose you the game, and our job was to make sure we didn't lose the game.”

When it was put to him that he and Neville look like best friends now, Carragher laughed and said: “Looks! That's certainly not the case!

“No listen, he went into punditry three or four years before me. He's been a revelation, he's been absolutely brilliant. We were put together and I wouldn't say we had much a relationship before that. As players we mixed at England but not too much, I wouldn't say.

“But now we do – we're never off the phone to each other!”

Asked if he and Neville go for a drink together, Carragher replied: “Yeah, yeah! But only after the show. Not in our spare time or our free time. Oh no!”
