Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appointed caretaker manager of Manchester United

Jesse Lingard became the first Manchester United player to comment publicly on Jose Mourinho’s sacking.

The midfielder was one of the few players who appeared to thrive under the Portuguese, establishing himself in the starting XI last season to the extent that he secured a key role in Gareth Southgate’s England team at the 2018 World Cup.

Manchester United’s players were said to be shocked by the news of Mourinho’s exit, and none had yet shared any reaction on their social media channels.

However, posting on Wednesday evening, Lingard broke his silence, writing: “Thank you for the memories and wisdom,” alongside a picture of himself with Mourinho on the Old Trafford touchline.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been installed as caretaker manager of the club, and will take charge of his first match when United visit his former club Cardiff City on Saturday.

Eric Bailly soon followed Lingard’s example, tweeting: “Whatever they may say, I will always be thankful to the person who gave me the chance to make my debut at Old Trafford. Thank you for what you have taught me. Good luck, coach.”
