An emotional Jurgen Klopp admitted he was “completely overwhelmed” by Liverpool’s Premier League title success as he broke down in tears during a live interview.

Liverpool were ensured of a first title in 30 years after Chelsea defeated second-placed Manchester City on Thursday evening, with the Reds’ players and staff gathered at a hotel on Merseyside to watch the game.

Klopp, whose side clinched the title with seven games to spare, was interviewed on Sky Sports alongside Sir Kenny Dalglish – the last manager to lead Liverpool to the title in 1990.

Dalglish said: “I’m very pleased for everybody connected to the football club. Since Jurgen’s come in, he’s done an unbelievable job. The camaraderie.

“When he came in, he was a fantastic coup. Brendan may have been unlucky to get the sack, but when Jurgen came in... he was unbelievable. They’ve been at it, and around about it, for a few years.

“Jurgen’s been absolutely fantastic, on the pitch with the players and off the field with everybody connected to the football club. He’s been a credit.”

Klopp immediately showed his emotion and responded: “I have no words. It’s unbelievable. It’s much more than I ever thought would be possible. Knowing how much Kenny has supported us, it’s for you. It’s for Stevie [Gerrard]. It’s for all.

“The boys admire you. It’s easy for me to motivate the team because of our great history.

“It was really tense! I didn’t want to be involved really. It’s an incredible achievement from my players, what they’ve done over the last two... three years is exceptional. It’s a joy for me to coach them.

“It’s quite an achievement. Because of the three months interruption... no one knew how we were going to come back. Tonight I can only tell you it’s for us. I hope you (the fans) stay at home and celebrate it. It’s a joy to do it for you.’

“My coaching staff, I couldn’t be more proud of what they’ve done. It’s a really exciting ride from the first day I arrived to today. And it’s not over yet, that’s the good thing. For tonight we will just enjoy this moment. It’s more than we ever dreamed of.

“We are in a bubble here. We get tested twice a week. Apart from this tonight, we do absolutely nothing. This is a safe place, it’s what we wanted tonight, so the boys can be together.

“We couldn’t hold back, we had to come together. It’s very important. It’s unforgettable. We will create pictures in the future. We will be together and enjoy this in a proper manner. Tonight we made the best of our situation.

“We all do that together. It’s a mix of the history you created, because those are the things we are rightly compared with, it gives us a lot of power. It’s the atmosphere in and around the club.

“The intensity level, everyone lives football at the club. It’s the players we’ve brought here. We can start winning together. It’s so incredibly difficult in these competitions. It’s only possible with consistency.

“You can’t ask for that, you have to create that, you have to convince people. Without the players I could do nothing. From time to time you have to help them with a few words. It’s such a big moment, I’m completely overwhelmed. I never knew it would feel like this.

“I had no idea. It’s just... sorry gentlemen, all the best!”
