Liverpool fans chuck bottles at Man City coach ahead of Champions League clash

A furious Jurgen Klopp says he was “embarrassed” and “ashamed” by the attack on Manchester City’s team bus and even thinks Liverpool fans should now abandon their pre-match welcome.

Bottles, cans, and flares were thrown at City’s bus as it arrived at Anfield before the Champions League tie between the two Premier League sides on Wednesday, which the hosts went on to win 3-0.

The Liverpool manager plans to make a personal apology to Guardiola before next week’s second leg at the Etihad Stadium.

Uefa have opened disciplinary proceedings while Merseyside Police are investigating the attack as videos of the incidents continue to emerge.

Klopp’s angry condemnation of the intimidatory approach adopted by supporters is not altogether surprising.

However, his comments urging fans to stop gathering on the streets to welcome the team in light of the events will raise eyebrows given he has previously been critical of the Anfield atmosphere and supporter participation in the past.

“I feel really embarrassed, ashamed,” Klopp said.

“It is like, ‘what?’ I cannot understand how you give these opportunity to the people to create something wonderful like this usually is.

“It was already on the edge with the flares or whatever which are not legal, but it is nice and special.

“But the people do not understand the rules and if I was to make the decision I would say it is not allowed anymore. It is not possible.

“You had the chance, didn’t use it, sorry. It was a historical moment because I was part of the last time it happened.”

Klopp labelled those who threw items at City’s bus as “idiots” as he recalled an incident when he was on the receiving end before a game in Germany.

He added: “I don’t have the words. It is idiots in this situation. How can you do that? It is not a little bit funny. It is dangerous, it feels bad

“I was on a bus once and a rock was thrown and we had a hole. It is not a bit of a joke. You feel it, you feel it. It was against Cologne and someone threw it through the window.

“You think if that hits my head, what happens? It is not funny. It is actually the complete opposite and I am really angry about it.”
