Kevin De Bruyne says topping Manchester City’s record-breaking season is ‘probably impossible’

Pep Guardiola said after the game that it would be “ridiculous” to beat the records they set this year, a view that star player De Bruyne echoed post-match

Kevin De Bruyne said that it will be “probably impossible” for Manchester City to match their 100-point record next Premier League season, but that will not stop them from trying.

City confirmed the unprecedented achievement with the last kick of their season at Southampton on Sunday afternoon before parading the Premier League trophy around Manchester on Monday. Now they depart for their summer holidays and the World Cup, three months before they defend their title starting in August.

Pep Guardiola said after the game that it would be “ridiculous” to beat the records they set this year, a view that star player De Bruyne echoed post-match. But he does want City to aim as high as possible.

“This year has been something special, but next year you all start from nil again,” De Bruyne said. “To do the same is probably impossible. But we have to try to manage it and try to win next year. But that is still a long time to go.”

“We have the most points ever and with the competition you have with all the big teams it is very tough and to get 100 points and only lose 14 points in the whole season to manage that is something special. 100 points is something special. Three digits is very difficult to manage again and to be part of that means a lot.”

Gabriel Jesus’ goal sparked wild celebrations and De Bruyne said that was because it was such a perfect moment, breaking the record with the last kick of the 38-game season. “We all knew if we get 100 points it would be something so special, and it is probably very difficult to manage again,” De Bruyne said. “It was the only thing to play for today and if you end the season that way, last minute, last kick of the season and you get 100 points it feels unbelievable.”
