Leeds ready to cash in on £6m Kewell

Leeds United have given up trying to persuade Harry Kewell to sign a new contract and are looking to raise £6m by to selling the winger.

The Elland Road club are now open to offers for Kewell, who is about to enter the last year of his contract and will become a free agent in July 2004.

Manchester United are said to be ready to turn their interest into a concrete bid. The United manager Sir Alex Ferguson sees Kewell as a cheaper option than Blackburn's Damien Duff, but after selling Rio Ferdinand last summer, Leeds will be reluctant to let another player go to Old Trafford.

Kewell is believed to be keen on joining Arsenal, but The Gunners so far have said they could only contemplate an exchange move because of their tight transfer budget. Valencia have been in touch through an agent, while Barcelona are possible runners with one of their presidential candidates claiming to have contacted Kewell's advisers.

The Leicester City manager Micky Adams has ended much speculation by signing a three-year contract extension at the new Premiership club. Adams had been linked with vacancies at Fulham and Aston Villa but said yesterday: "I'm delighted to have signed again but you never, ever think you've made it and I'm going to redouble my efforts to make sure I feel as good as I do now by this time next year."

Liverpool's El-Hadji Diouf, has pleaded not guilty to spitting at a Celtic fan during their Uefa Cup match in March. The Senegal striker will now go on trial for assault at Glasgow Sheriff Court in September.

The Celtic striker Chris Sutton has apologised again to Dunfermline after accusing them of "lying down" to allow Rangers to clinch the championship last Sunday. Sutton apologised through his agent, John Viola, during the week. Now a personal apology has been posted on the official Celtic website.
