Andy Robertson say Liverpool regained their “spark” after the club’s 5-0 battering of Watford at Anfield on Wednesday.

Having failed to score in their previous two games, the rout saw Jurgen Klopp’s side retain their slender one-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

Liverpool’s left-back heralded the rejuvenatory win, after a spell where the cogs had begun to grate a little more, and believes the squad have regained their cutting-edge in time to fend of Manchester City.

“A lot of people have been saying that we lost our spark in the games,” Robertson said.

“You can kind of agree, we had one shot on target against United and it was Sturridge’s shot from 45 yards which trickled into de Gea’s arms….for us we didn’t create enough and we have to look at that. But tonight it could have been more than five.

“Maybe it was the spark that we’ve been needing – maybe it will be the spark that gives the lads the confidence in front of goal again, I’m sure it will.”

Robertson also hailed his talismanic defensive partner Virgil van Dijk and claimed the towering Dutchman should be crowned as the Premier League’s player of the year if his form is to continue.

The Dutch centre-back scored twice in Liverpool’s 5-0 win against Watford on Wednesday, as Klopp’s side maintained their slender one-point lead at the top of the table.

“Virgil is the best centre back in the world. That’s the way he’s playing and the confidence he’s got. And he’s still young enough that he can get even better. He works hard every day. Probably the only disappointment for him is that he hasn’t chipped in with enough goals.

“If the season ended tonight, I would give him [player of the year] personally. There are still ten games to go. Somebody can step up from another team. But Virgil can take it to a whole new level, I reckon. He’s so consistent as well. If he puts the performances in during the last ten games as he has done, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t have that trophy.”
