Liverpool FC: A look back at 2018

Joel Matip has been ruled out for six weeks after the centre-back broke his collarbone in Liverpool’s Champions League victory against Napoli on Tuesday evening.

Matip impressed alongside Virgil van Dijk and completed the full 90 minutes, but was left crumpled on the floor at full-time having fallen awkwardly on his shoulder in an aerial challenge with Kalidou Koulibaly.

The 27-year-old was hurried to hospital immediately after the match and Liverpool have now confirmed that the Cameroonian will need an operation.

Matip is expected to miss at least eight upcoming matches, beginning on Sunday when Liverpool host Manchester United, as well as fixtures against Arsenal and Manchester City.

The news leaves Liverpool desperately short of cover at centre-back, after Joe Gomez was also ruled out for six weeks last week, after suffering a leg break against Burnley.

There's also added injury concerns for Jurgen Klopp's side after Trent Alexander-Arnold limped off the field against Napoli, while James Milner too is awaiting assessment.
