Jurgen Klopp hails players' character as Liverpool surge back to winning ways

Jurgen Klopp has calmed fears after Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner and Fabinho all missed the first training session of Liverpool’s warm-weather break in Marbella due to injury concerns.

The trio all started in Liverpool’s 3-0 win against Bournemouth on Saturday, but Milner and Wijnaldum have since been stricken by illness and trained separately to the rest of the squad.

Fabinho, has a minor muscle strain, but Jurgen Klopp expects the Brazilian to be able to return to training within the next couple of days.

“It’s how it is after games, you have a couple of problems,” Klopp told Liverpool’s club website.

“Millie and Gini still struggle with their illnesses, so they did a bit of work in the hotel. Fabinho felt [something] a little bit; it will not be a problem, but there was no reason for him to be out today.

“Hopefully he can train tomorrow and if not then the day after that. None of them are serious, all will be fine.”

Dejan Lovren did not travel with the squad as he continues his return from a hamstring injury, and it’s unclear whether the Croatian will be able to return in time for the first-leg of Liverpool’s last-16 Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.

Virgil van Dijk is suspended for the game after picking up three yellow cards in the group stage, while Joe Gomez remains a long-term absentee meaning Liverpool are desperately short in central defence.

“Dejan is not here and Joe [Gomez] is not here,” Klopp continued.

“That’s never a good sign, I would say, but we will try everything to make Dejan available for Munich. It will be a tight race.

“For him, it makes sense in the moment to be in another place to do what he has to do. It wouldn’t have helped if he was here, so we will try everything – that’s clear.”
