Liverpool fans gathered at Anfield on Thursday evening to celebrate their club’s first ever Premier League title.

Defending champions Manchester City needed to defeat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to prevent Jurgen Klopp’s side from clinching the trophy, but were beaten 2-1 thanks to goals from Christian Pulisic and Willian.

The former fired the Blues ahead before Kevin De Bruyne equalised in the second half with a stunning free-kick, but the visitors were undone when Fernandinho handled the ball on his goal-line.

The incident saw the Brazilian sent off and resulted in a penalty, which Willian dispatched confidently to seal the win and ensure Liverpool’s triumph.

While Liverpool fans were unable to celebrate with their players, they did gather at Anfield to celebrate with one another.

The trophy is manager Jurgen Klopp’s third league title to go with the two won in Germany with Borussia Dortmund.

The Premier League crown comes thanks to the highest points rate English football has ever seen, with 86 from 31 matches, making them the earliest ever champions in terms of games played.

This title win follows last year’s victories in the Champions League and Club World Cup, emotionally bringing a glittering period for the club to a peak, with the trophy they wanted above all others.

The success also vindicates the entire Fenway Sports Group project, as well as Klopp’s decision to go to Anfield in 2015.

The players had already been uttering the phrase “back on our perch” in the last few days, referencing a famous line by Sir Alex Ferguson after Manchester United overtook Liverpool’s status as England’s dominant team in the 1990s.

Liverpool are now one off United’s record of 20 titles, and that is the next target for this team, as they seek to retain the title for the first time since 1983-84.

Liverpool are next in action against Man City on 2 July and will be hoping to give their supporters another moment to celebrate.

A parade is planned when it is safe to do so.
