Manchester United players were given a stark reality check as Louis van Gaal ordered them to train straight after their pre-season loss to Paris Saint Germain - and an eight hour flight home.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils' stars were driven straight to the airport from the Soldier Field Stadium before enjoying a lengthy flight in Business Class.

However, it has now transpired, manager Van Gaal was just sweetening them up for a blow as he revealed they would be heading straight for their Carrington training base when they arrived in Manchester.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach has previous in this department having redirected United's team bus half-an-hour off schedule in Santa Monica last season to allow the players to walk off any lactic acid that may have built up in their legs.

It remains to be seen whether the Red Devils will be given a day off before the season curtain-raiser this Saturday afternoon, but Van Gaal continues to stamp his authority.
