Manchester City’s Twitter account  disappeared on Wednesday morning, with the profile of the Premier League club inaccessible to its millions of followers.

It is not clear what triggered the sudden disappearance of the account, which runs off the Twitter handle @ManCity, though it’s understood it was not deleted or removed by Twitter.

A default Twitter message which appeared on Wednesday morning reads on the club’s profile page: “This account doesn’t exist”.

The club were quickly made aware of the issues and upon investigating the matter, they concluded that they have not had their account hacked.

City’s account is followed by more than 8.5m accounts, making it the fifth-most followed club in the Premier League and the 10th worldwide.

Access to the account was restored shortly after midday, with the club saying that the outage was due to a technical error with Twitter.
