Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has invited Paul Scholes to ‘have a chat’ about his sudden departure from Oldham Athletic.

Scholes stepped down as Oldham’s manager on Thursday after just 31 days in the role following allegations of interference from the club’s owner Abdallah Lemsagam.

The United great, a team-mate of Solskjaer’s during the mid-1990s and 2000s, said in a statement that the job had not turned out the way he expected.

“It unfortunately became clear that I would not be able to operate as I intended and was led to believe prior to taking on the role,” he said in a statement.

When asked for his reaction to Scholes’ exit, Solskjaer said he had been in contact with the former midfielder and said he would be welcome to come to Carrington for a chat.

“Were you [surprised]? He’s probably got his reasons why he left, so you’ve gotta ask him,” Solskjaer said.

“He’s invited here if he wants to come and have a little chat about it. We’ve texted and it didn’t work out. That’s just management.”

Lemsagam said he was "disappointed" by Scholes' decision but claimed he gave the 44-year-old the "autonomy" he desired at Boundary Park.
