Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has cast doubt on club captain Antonio Valencia’s Manchester United future at a crucial time for the Ecuadorian.
Valencia’s contract expires at the end of the season and United must trigger their one-year extension clause by 5.00pm today in order renew his existing terms.
The 33-year-old full-back, who is currently out of contention with a calf injury, has made 338 appearances for United but has not played under Solskjaer since 2 January.
Solskjaer said on Friday that he was not sure whether the club and Valencia will agree to extended terms.
The United caretaker also suggested that the full-back’s future depends on him returning to fitness and impressing before the end of the season.

Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton David de Gea - 5 A rare off-day. Little he could do about Ward-Prowse’s free-kick but moved too late for Valery’s opener.
Getty
Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Ashley Young - 6 Conceded the free-kick which Ward-Prowse scored from and made a poor choice from the throw-in which led to Valery’s goal.
Getty
Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Victor Lindelof - 7 Like Smalling, won enough aerial duels to help keep Southampton at bay and was tidy with his distribution.
Getty
Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Chris Smalling - 6 Not as impressive as in previous appearances since returning to the team but still helped limit the visitors to just three shots on target.
Getty
Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Luke Shaw 7 Stood off Valery for Southampton’s opener but made up for it with his build-up play, having a hand in United’s last two goals.

Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Scott McTominay 6 Not as influential as United’s other inexperienced midfielder. Guilty of a few sloppy passes but then so were several others.
Getty
Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Andreas Pereira 8 Scored and assisted, and his goal was a beauty. Unrecognisable from the player who struggled against Reading and Burnley recently.

Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Paul Pogba - 6 Struggled to exert his usual influence in midfield and missed from the spot for the third time this season.
Getty
Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Alexis Sanchez - 5 One cute pass to put Luke Shaw in behind on the left was his biggest contribution. Departed injured and United suddenly picked up without him.

Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Romelu Lukaku - 8 Wasteful at the start but clinical when it counted. A Jekyll and Hyde display but ultimately United’s match-winner.
Getty
Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Marcus Rashford - 6 Likely still feeling the effects of Sunday’s ankle injury. Showed little of his recent form and looked a touch hesitant.
Getty
Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Angus Gunn - 7 Made a superb early stop from Lukaku and saved a late Pogba penalty. Shame about the three goals in between, which he could do little about.
Getty
Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Jan Bednarek - 5 Careless in possession, which allowed United to come back at Southampton.
Getty
Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Maya Yoshida - 5 Appeared to be the weak link in Southampton’s backline. Allowed Pereira to get away from him too easily in the build-up to Lukaku’s first.

Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Jannik Vestergaard - 6 The most impressive member of Southampton’s defence but missed a free header at close range early doors.

Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Yan Valery - 8 Scored a stunning first senior goal to give Southampton the lead, though De Gea was disappointed with his role in it.
Getty
Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton James Ward-Prowse - 8 Brilliant free-kick levelled for 2-2. Could hardly have played it better, with De Gea left grasping at air.
Getty
Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Oriol Romeu - 7 Unsettled United’s midfield in the first half but found himself over-ran as Solskjaer’s side built momentum.
Getty
Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg - 6 Impressed with the ball at his feet early on but will be disappointed to not win the ball from Fred in the move that led to Lukaku’s winner.

Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Ryan Bertrand - 5 A little fortunate to only receive a yellow for an unorthodox tackle on Lukaku. Nipped in behind on occasion but with little success.

Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Charlie Austin - 6 Offered energetic pressing but struggled to get himself involved on the ball before being substituted. Assisted Valery’s thunderbolt, all the same.

Player ratings from Manchester United vs Southampton Nathan Redmond - 5 Struggled to get the better of Smalling and Lindelof. Like Austin, quiet for large spells but was not hooked by Hasenhuttl.

“He’s still not 100% fit, he is still working to get back fit and he’s had a fantastic career here at Man United and in England,” he said.
“He is one of the Premier League winners left in the dressing room but at the moment I’m not sure if Man United and Antonio will agree on the next year.
“So it depends if he gets back on the pitch as well in the next few months but he’s the captain, a great servant to the club.
“Hopefully I can get him on the pitch and show what he can do, or he can get himself 100% fit and back on the pitch.”
Valencia is the longest-serving member of the current United squad, having joined from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2009.
The Ecuadorian has won two Premier League titles in his time at Old Trafford, as well as an FA Cup, two EFL Cups and the Europa League.
