Manchester United friendly vs Stoke called off after Michael O’Neill tests postive for coronavirus

O'Neill and Stoke party did not come into contact with United players at Carrington

Manchester United’s friendly with Stoke City was called off on Tuesday after Michael O’Neill, the Championship club’s manager, tested positive for coronavirus.

A match at United’s Carrington training ground was cancelled shortly before kick-off, with the members of the visiting party sent home.

No United players interacted or came into contact with O’Neill or other Stoke players and staff members, who were based in Carrington’s academy building.

O’Neill had undergone a test for Covid-19 on Monday and was informed of the positive result after travelling to Manchester for the practice match.

A Stoke statement said: “Stoke City can confirm that manager Michael O’Neill has tested positive for the Covid-19 virus following the latest round of testing on Monday (June 8).

“O’Neill had tested negative in the previous five rounds of testing. He will now follow the relevant guidance and undergo a period of isolation, whilst continuing to be in regular virtual contact with his coaching staff and players.”

“Assistant manager Billy McKinlay will take charge of training as the Potters prepare for their game against Reading on June 20.”

United’s players took part in an intra-squad friendly after the Stoke game was cancelled and will now look to arrange a training ground friendly with another opponent.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are set to return to action a week on Friday away to Tottenham Hotspur.
