Riyad Mahrez could make his full Manchester City debut in the Community Shield against Chelsea despite suffering an injury scare.

Mahrez was withdrawn midway through the first half of City’s 3-2 friendly win over Bayern Munich this weekend after going to ground clutching his left ankle.

The Algerian, a £60m arrival from Leicester City this summer, was pictured on crutches and wearing a protective boot upon the squad’s return to Manchester on Sunday.

However, a scan on Mahrez’s ankle on Monday revealed no serious damage and the 27-year-old could line up at Wembley on Sunday.

Mahrez featured in all three of City’s pre-season friendlies in the United States and impressed, settling in well with his new team-mates before Saturday’s injury.

Reigning Premier League champions City take on Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea, the FA Cup winners, in the season’s traditional curtain-raiser.

Pep Guardiola’s side then start the defence of their league crown against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on 12 August.
