Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that vice-captain Michael Carrick is fit and ready for selection against Liverpool.

The midfielder, 34, had to pull out of the England squad last week because of a calf injury but is back and could start at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

However, the Dutch coach also revealed that centre-back Phil Jones is still missing while young midfielder Andreas Pereira picked up an injury while playing for the Brazil youth team against France.

Jones, who is yet to play this season, should return to training next week if he is given permission by the specialist.

"Jones was already injured so I have two injured players," Van Gaal told MUTV. "It is going very well with him, the clot has gone. We need the permission of the specialist at the hospital but I think, next week, he will train again with us.

"He [Carrick] can play. He was very wise to come in [pull out of international duty], but I think he can play. We have to wait and see also in the last training session, but I think he can play."
