Louis van Gaal has made two changes to the team that was surprisingly beaten by Southampton in their last Premier League match.

Manchester United managed just one shot on target in that match, a result that leaves the club in fifth place, five points below Tottenham Hotspur.

Against Stoke City, Van Gaal has dropped two midfielders, with Morgan Schneiderlin dropping to the bench and Ander Herrera left out all together.

Michael Carrick comes in alongside Marouane Fellaini, while Juan Mata will play behind Wayne Rooney up front.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes has made four changes to the team that was well beaten by Leicester City 3-0.

Marc Muniesa replaces Ryan Shawcross in the centre of defence - he picked up another injury at Leicester - and three of the front four are changed.

Joselu, Xherdan Shaqiri and Mame Biram Diouf all drop to the bench with Jon Walters, Marko Arnautovic and Peter Crouch coming in.

TEAMS:

Manchester United: De Gea, Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Borthwick-Jackson, Fellaini, Carrick, Lingard, Mata, Martial, Rooney.

Subs: Romero, McNair, Varela, Schneiderlin, Herrera, Pereira, Memphis.

Stoke City: Butland, Johnson, Wollscheid, Muniesa, Pieters, Whelan, Afella, Walters, Bojan, Arnautovic, Crouc

Subs: Haugaard, Bardsley, Ireland, Odemwingie, Joselu, Diouf, Shaqiri
